Run, Talk & more!

"It feels like it should be term break already! Term 1 this year is way too long. " This was the discussion we were having with our economics teacher. Adjusting back to school after the long weekend was hard. We all need the term break so badly!

The past week was alright. We ended the week with interhouse Cross Country! Running & I don't go well together but I thought it would be a good chance for me to challenge myself and take part in it anyway since it was my last year. So 2.5km run in the morning followed by my English Oral presentation to end the week... How nice...

I must say, I'm pretty impressed with myself. I actually pushed myself to jog the majority of the course despite feeling exhausted.... I was really nervous for my English Oral Presentation. I could actually feel myself shaking from nervousness. Honestly, I write better than I speak. I feel that I'm able to better express myself through writing than speaking. Our English presentation was about how contextual factors affect the reading of an image or something along those lines. When I first received the oral topic a week ago, I thought that it was easy... It was not until I got down to doing it that i realised how hard it was.

WARNING: I'll be sharing my English Oral Presentation here... It may be a really long post!

I really loved the image I chose for the oral presentation. Maybe I'm somewhat feminist... I don't know. I'm still discovering my identity.

Does she look familiar? Yes! She is opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi. Many say that politics runs in her blood as her late father was the Commander of the Burmese Independent Army. Her family had foresight and encouraged her to pursue education from a young age. Compared to women of her time, she is very well educated. She studied Philosophy, Politics & Economics in Oxford University

Background: This picture was taken on 19 September 2012 in Washington DC when Ms Aung San Suu Kyi visited to receive the US Congressional Gold Medal. It was awarded for her leadership & commitment in promoting freedom and democracy in Burma (Myanmar). It was initially awarded to her in 2008 but she could not receive the award then as she was under house arrest by the Burmese government. In my opinion, i believe that this is a step taken by the US to strengthen bilateral relationships with Myanmar.

Dressing: The people who I presume are government officials stand around her to applaud her achievements. They are dressed in suits suggesting that they have high regard for this ceremony. They are all dressed up as they want to look presentable to show respect for the event. The American flags in the background help people without contextual knowledge infer that they are involved in a distinguished and formal event.

Symbolism: Ms Aung San Suu Kyi alone is a symbol of democracy & freedom. The passion and dedication she’s put in to make her visions a reality is simply admirable. The Burmese government wanted to deter her fight for democracy by putting her under 15 years of house arrest, away from her loved ones. As they thought that her family was her weakness and she won’t survive long under the tough conditions of house arrest. However, she proved the Burmese government wrong. Despite being separated from her family, Ms Aung San Suu Kyi persevered because of her loyalty to her Country and people. She wanted to give the people what they deserved - Democracy. Ms Aung San Suu Kyi is a symbol of empowerment to women around the world. She has proven that women with a bit of perseverance have the power to change the world. While she was under house arrest, she was unable to fulfil her domestic roles as a woman. As such, her late husband Michael Aris challenged gender stereotypes and took charge of bringing up their 2 sons, Alexander and Kim.

Focal Point: As we can see, Ms Aung San Suu Kyi is the focal point of the image. The photographer framed the image in the way that the US political leaders are standing around her.  I don’t know about you, but I feel that the middle third of the picture really caught my attention. It might be a coincidence. But notice that two other women are standing behind Ms Aung San Suu Kyi. I presume that they too have prominent leadership positions in government. The first thing that came into my mind was “Women Power!” It is encouraging to see an increasing number of women in the male dominated area of politics. This suggests that there is progress in the field of politics as gender equality is observed.

Camera Angle: The photographer chose to frame this image as a close up shot as it gives viewers a
sense of intimacy.  It is so close up that the viewers are able to examine the body language of the
government officials in the picture.  It seems to create the illusion that the viewers are actually a part of
this event. When I look at the picture, I imagine myself among the crowd, applauding and
congratulating Ms Aung San Suu Kyi for her notable achievements such as winning the Nobel peace
prize in 1991. And in this instance, receiving the US congressional Gold Medal. I feel especially proud
of Ms Aung San Suu Kyi because she has proved to the world that women can be as accomplished as
men.

In Conclusion: When I look at this picture, I feel very encouraged. This picture proves that there is gender equality and acceptance in our modern society. The men in the picture are seen applauding as Ms Aung San Suu Kyi receives the gold medal. The body language of the men shows that they appreciate her efforts in her battle for democracy in Burma and they respect her as a woman who has the power to change the world.  I don’t know about you but Ms Aung San Suu Kyi is definitely my role model. A strong, independent woman filled with compassion and determination to fight for what she truly believes in.

Yea, this was the summary of my oral presentation. Don't you love how English can be combined with
Politics & Law? I've a pretty crazy week ahead with 3 tests and 2 being rather content heavy. Please
keep me in prayer!

Have an Awesome Weekend!

God's love & blessings~
