The debate Heartbeat...

I was back in Singapore for my mid-term break last weekend. It was a great break for me as I managed to eat my favourite food and catch up with as many friends I possibly can. A highlight of the trip was supporting my debate juniors at the annual Julia Gabriel's Inter-school debating Championships.

I remembered how nervous I felt before a debate and it definitely feels different to be a supporter. It was an intense debate and by attending the session, I realised how much I actually miss debate and that there were many life skills I learnt from participating in it. My juniors put up a good fight with their content knowledge and confidence. Sadly, the proposition won based on style. Many people were shocked about the adjudicators' decision but nothing can be done about it. As I watched my juniors humbly gather round the Chair adjudicator to find out their weakness. I realised that I was once like them. I started out being really soft spoken and shy. By participating in debate, I became more confident and more outspoken.

Recently I got back my tests which I sat for before my mid term break. The results were not very ideal. I practically failed my Math Specialist test and just passed both Math and Politics & Law test. When I first received my grades, I was really depressed about it. I was 'fighting' with my teacher for more marks to push up my grade. But then, something 'hit' me. I suddenly remembered the debate I previously attended. I was reminded of how the team that lost would humbly go up to the chair adjudicator to see on areas that they can improve on. Wait a minute, I was in that position before. I realised that my approach to my tests were COMPLETELY WRONG. I changed my perspective and I went up to my respective teachers to seek their advice on my areas of weakness. They were quite helpful and offered their time to help me if I needed it.

This is when the Life skills of debate come shining through :) I believe that it was also part of God's plan for me to be a part of my Secondary school's debate team so that I would learn skills which will help me in the future.
